Has anyone used a shock collar/training collar on a Doberman?

griffunramsey:

I have an (give or take) 11month old Dobie that we rescued and he does NOT like my cats. He also does not listen to us when we try to get his attention in our backyard. My father would like to use a shock collar or a training collar to correct him.

Any suggestions or tips?

If you’re dead-set on using a shock collar on your dog (your puppy!) PLEASE consult a trainer with good reviews/ratings and tons of experience. To put it bluntly, you can really fuck up a dog if you use a shock collar incorrectly and this can set your training and relationship with the dog back instead of moving it forward. In short, it caan do more harm than good.

Tumblr isn’t the place to get your answers…. find yourself a reputable trainer or behaviorist.

PSA: How to (correctly) fit a prong collar →

Something that grinds my gears….

Far too many people do this wrong. There’s a huge difference between the collar sliding down your thin-neck’d dog’s neck and the collar just being too large. If the collar is too big you could be doing damage to your dog.

A properly fitted prong looks like this…Right behind the ears, people!
